8 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park, nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps, is a tranquil paradise full of mesmerising scenery at every turn.

With a long stretch of 880 square kilometres in Slovenia’s northern-western area, you’ll be treated to some of the country’s most stunning natural wonders.

It is by far one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever visited. I was lucky to stop off during my trip around the Bled area.

I was in awe of the abundance of stunning lakes, glistening waterfalls, winding gorges, and hikes that lasted for hours and left me tired but intensely satisfied with what I saw along the way.

Is Triglav National Park worth visiting?

Yes, 100%. Triglav National Park has many fun adventure days with so much natural beauty. It is a perfect, serene escape from the bustling city of Ljubljana or the touristy area of Lake Bled.

But where should you go? Let’s dive into the most beautiful places to visit in Triglav National Park.

Most beautiful places in Triglav National Park

I will now explore the most beautiful places in Triglav National Park, along with recommendations and tips for your visit. With so many places to choose from, it was very hard to narrow it down!

1. Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Slovenia

Its long, pristine waters make it perfect for a fun, relaxing day out or for those looking to participate in water activities, including fishing and boating.

If you want adventure by foot, there are many scenic hikes in the vicinity, with restaurants and cafes on site, to grab a bite or a drink while getting some of the most picturesque views of the lake, with the mountainous surroundings of the Julian Alps.

While at Lake Bohinj, you’ll come across one of its most famous monuments, the ‘Church of St. John the Baptist‘, which has some of the finest medieval architecture in Slovenia. Tickets for the bell tower or church cost €3. A combined ticket is €5,

You’ll get one of the best lake views here!

With Lake Bohinj only a quick bus journey from Lake Bled, it has always been its counterpart, where tourists include both on their travel itinerary. I was lucky enough to stop off by both places, with Bohinj, I must say, being a much calmer and less touristy lake to visit.

2. Vintgar Gorge

Cost: €10

Vintgar Gorge, situated along the Radovana River, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Triglav National Park.

As you walk across the 1.6 km-long wooden boardwalks, you’ll be treated to some of the finest cascading waterfalls and long winding rapids that will surely tickle the senses.

It will take 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk around at a leisurely place, but I’m sure once you start, that’ll soon be extended. There are many photo opportunities at every turn!

At the end, there is also a wooden hut that sells beverages if you fancy a stop-off. It’s next to a picturesque waterfall. Grab a drink and end off your thrilling time at Vintgar Gorge in style.

Note: Vintgar Gorge is closed during the winter

3. Savica Waterfall

Cost: €3 for adults and €2 for children (25% more in the summer)

Not far from Lake Bohinj and located in the Bohinj valley is Savica Waterfall, one of the most beautiful things to see in Triglav National Park.

The Savica waterfall requires a somewhat strenuous hike to reach it, depending on your starting point. For the best starting point to the waterfall, make your way to the parking lot of Savica. From here, you’ll just need to climb 553 steps towards it!

Dont worry. Once you reach it, that hard graft will soon be forgotten. It is truly stunning!

Top tip: The best time to visit it is early summer/late spring. This is where it is at its most picturesque, where the increased volume of water from the melted snow on the Julian Alps cascades down the rocks.

4. Bovec

The mountain town of Bovec is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Triglav National Park.

It is perhaps most famous for the Soča River that meanders through its town. Soča River is one of the most beautiful in Europe, with its crystal clear waters that will be sure to wow you.

Many outdoor enthusiasts come here to participate in activities like white-water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, ziplining and much more.

Accommodation is also available at a decent price. It proves to be a good home base for those wishing to stay in Triglav National Park!

5. Pericnik Waterfall

Pericnik Waterfall is situated in Vrata Valley, a stunning part of Slovenia. The waterfall’s pristine flowing waters, surrounded by mountainous landscapes, make it a sight for sore eyes. Oh, and even better, it is free to go!

Visitors can reach the waterfall from a 10-minute hike from the starting point of Peričnik hut.

The waterfall is about 52 meters high and is most picturesque during winter, when its waters turn into icicles, creating scenery reminiscent of a winter wonderland. You can walk behind the waterfall and get a clear shot of it.

6. Kranjska Gora

Located in the northwestern part of Triglav National Park, Kranjska Gora is a town full of stunning natural beauty and a cosy retreat away from the bustling areas of Slovenia.

With high-top mountains and glacier lakes, it is a well-recognised spot for skiing and other winter sports.

Though in summer, it is still worth the visit with its ever-beautiful nearby lake, ‘Lake Jasna, ‘ where you’ll be sure to enjoy some peaceful relaxation and swimming.

You’ll have plenty of stop points, coming across some of its famous attractions, including The Bear’s Head, The Dantes Cave and The Devil’s Bridge.

It will take around 30 minutes to walk around. However, I recommend taking your time and visiting all the viewing/stopping points. They all offer a unique vantage point of Tolmin Gorge.

Located in the Soca Valley region, this little waterfall is tucked away beneath a cave near the small town of Kobarid, accessible through one of the best hikes you’ll find in Triglav National Park.

The hike takes around 45 minutes from Kobarid, but if you’re coming from Napoleon Bridge, then it shouldn’t take more than 25 minutes to get there.

Where to stay in Triglav National Park

The best place to stay when visiting the Triglav National Park would be Bled. Although it’s just outside, it offers various accommodations for all budgets and quick transport in and out of the national park.

It also gives you more freedom to choose whether you want to explore Bled for a day or continue your adventures in other Slovenian locations.

Bovec is also a brilliant place to stay and offers cheaper accommodation options. However, compared to Bled, its main downside is its limited connections to other parts of Slovenia.

How many days should I spend in Triglav National Park?

You should allocate at least three days to explore Triglav National Park.

This does not even include the timescales for visiting the surroundings of the national parks like Bled and the Soca Valley region. There is just so much beauty in Slovenia to venture into!
